Pop-Up Night Club

A temporary night club hidden in the quiet suburbs of Jericho, responding to the closure of clubs and of spaces where upcoming artists can prosper in this run-down corner of Oxford. The project curates space and materiality as a direct result of its sound constraints and the challenge of the site's heritage and acoustic limitations.

The club sits on the canal edge and works in two registers at once. At street level, a ring of heavy curtains forms a soft, glowing enclosure: permeable enough to invite, opaque enough to conceal. Above it, a mirrored volume reflects the surrounding terraces and the canal back at themselves, so that the loudest programme on the street is also, visually, the quietest. The building disappears into its own context at the exact moment it is most alive.

Because the brief is temporary, every move is reversible: a lightweight frame, hung fabric, and a demountable mirrored box. The acoustic strategy does the form-finding, with the section shaped by how sound must be held, baffled, and released.

This project tests the opposite instincts to my heritage work: not restraint beside a protected building, but disappearance, atmosphere, and event within a residential fabric that must wake up the next morning undisturbed.
